THE CALLOW RUN 4TH JUNE 2022 The first running of the Callow Run since 2012 took place on the 4th June from the village hall. There were three events in total - the Chase a 4.5 mile run, the Crawl a 3.5 mile walk and the Pootle - the Crawl route but for one man and his dog. After several weeks of uncertainty,  thanks to support and sponsorship from Stapeley Vets and Worthen and Shelve Parish Council and the Village Hall committee we were able to welcome 30 runners in the Chase, 8 participants in the Crawl and a single entry in the Pootle. The conditions were almost perfect once the event began but thanks to the runners particularly for their patience waiting in the cole both for the start and for the prizegiving. In future we shall ensure access to the main Village Hall but it was already set out for the evening event. The Chase began at 1200 and the runners soon disappeared from view. The Pootle had a timed start at 1205 and the participants in the Crawl left after this time. I had estimated a pace of approximately 8 minutes per mile based on how hilly the Chase course was so everyone at the Village Hall was really surprised after just over 31 minutes the first runner reappeared - this was Orlando Bayliss who completed the course in a time of 31 mins 40 seconds. Less than a minute later Liam Bennett crossed the line for second…

We happened

Thanks to everyone involved in the three events yesterday and thankfully the weather was OK for all events and the feedback from participants was very positive. I shall write a full update which will be published on here and in the Hope Newsletter but I wanted to put the results up as soon as possible. If you have any images of anything connected with the event and would like to add them to this site or to the video that I shall be compiling please send them to me using. Special thanks to Steve, Alastair, Sarah, Dan, Barry, Ruth and Charles for acting as marshals on the day - without you the event could not have happened. Thanks to Debbie and Janet for providing refreshments, Molly for medal presentation and as ever to Susan for her patience and tolerance. Thanks also to Benno and all at Stapeley Vets for their kind sponsorship of the event. See you all in 2023 hopefully, Alistair

Update 2nd June – Two days to go

We are delighted that the event is to go ahead on Saturday and today I have marked the course with some arrows for guidance. The Chase is marked with Orange arrows out, blue arrows for some of the return and then red arrows. The final course map is shown on the routes page and will be available on the day The Crawl and Pootle are marked with white arrows out and black arrows on the return. The final course map is shown on the routes page. We have received over 30 entries for all the events. We shall continue to accept entries on the day but please note that if the entries exceed 40 we shall not be able to provide finishers medals for late entries. If you enter in this situation on the day you will pay a reduced entry fee. WARNING - although the ground is dry there are some very uneven sections on the Callow including by the gates and where the footpaths join on the descent from the Callow. There is also a slightly fallen tree in the woods and although you can pass to either side extra care should be taken. Potentially the junctions at Gravels (on the Chase) and at Hemford will not be marshalled although I am still trying to sort this out. Further information will be given at the briefing on Saturday. Note - The forecast for Saturday includes showers and please take extra care on the off-road sections if they are…

Update 26th May

We are delighted to announce that thanks to support from Hope Village Hall Committee and Stapely Vets Practice the Chase, Crawl and Pootle will be taking place on 4th June even though there are only a few entries at the moment. I am grateful for the support of all those who have agreed to marshall the road junctions on the different routes but I would still welcome the support of a person to act as a sweeper and someone to take photos on the Callow. I am also very grateful to Anna Bayliss, who in addition to encouraging her family and friends to run, will be providing a trophy in memory of her late husband Richard who did so much for this community. The trophy will be awarded to the first person to finish in the Chase (4.5 mile run). Anna has run the proposed Chase course which can now be found on Strava at https://www.strava.com/activities/7096059370. There is also a Strava group for prospective runners. The Crawl and Pootle will follow a different route to the Chase with slightly less distance but no less climbing! The Pootle is timed but the Crawl is not but I ask that all participants are finished by 1:30 when the marshalls will take the rest of the day off. We will accept entries on the day for all events. However, entry costs on the day will be £8 for individuals and £15 for families. You can still enter online at https://callowrun.uk/enter-the-events up tp the 27th…

Update 25th March 2022

(as published in the Hope Newsletter) SATURDAY 4TH JUNE 2022 at HOPE VILLAGE HALL The Chase at 4 miles is mainly on roads although there is a section of cross country around the Callow and then over some fields (including gates) before a downhill finish. The Chase will be an individual timed event and we hope to develop it further in future years. There will be priz- es in a number of categories. Limited to 40 participants. The Crawl at 3.5 miles is intended as a walk retracing the steps of many of the school children of Hope in previous years. This is almost all on road but still involves a lot of uphill (to be taken at your own pace). This event is suitable for families with or without dogs. Limited to 30 participants There is an additional event of “Pootle with Pooch” which involves an in-dividual and their dog. This can be a walk/jog and will take place over thesame course as the Crawl. This will be timed event and again there will be prizes in a number of catego- ries. Dogs will be on leads at all times and please clean up after your dog. Limited to 30 people partici- pants. There will be light refreshments available at the finish of the event and a souvenir memento. There are toilet facilities at Hope Village hall (start and finish) although there are no changing facilities. There will be a drinks station on the course and road junctions, turns…

Update February 28th

We are continuing to make arrangements for reintroducing the Callow Run under its new name. There will be two events. The Callow Chase—a timed run starting and finishing on roads with a section of off-road in the middle. This will be approximately 4 miles with over 500ft of climbing. You can see the provisional course on the event website www.callowrun.uk together with Strava segments and a Strava club if you want to set a course record. Prizes available in various categories . The Callow Crawl—a walk but two events. A fun walk for all including families of about 3 miles—not timed but a chance to get sponsorship. A timed fun walk/jog for you and your dog. This will be the same course as the Crawl but can be done at your or your dog’s pace. Prizes in various categories As this is a new event we shall be limiting numbers on this first event and entries will be available early in April. If you would like to help rather than participate we would welcome support for marshals, time- keepers, sandwich makers etc. If you are a local business and you would like to sponsor the event by providing bibs (with your name on), prizes, refreshments then please con- tact us at [email protected] . We would in- clude any branding etc on the event website and other publicity. This will help us to keep entry costs low. So if you know of a runner, walker, pooch who would like to take…
